About James McQueen
A grandfather's paperbacks
James McQueen is a working name. The artist behind it has shown under it since 2017 and keeps his identity private. His subject has barely changed in that time: the mass-market paperback, and above all the mid-century Penguin. The interest began with his grandfather's collection of mid-20th-century paperbacks. Penguin was founded in 1935 to make books cheap enough for anyone to own, and that reach is what made its covers so familiar.
On his canvases the cover keeps its familiar look and loses its title. In its place goes a phrase, often taken from his own life: I Had Fun Once It Was Awful, Be Careful What You Wish For, Give Me Solutions Not Fucking Problems. He describes his tone as "provocative, comic and cynical", though more recent work has turned towards love and hope.
Making a new book look old
Each painting is built from many layers of paint in different colours, with spray paint and stencils, and the dry surface is then sanded back so the earlier layers show through, in places down to the threads of the canvas. A coat of lacquer then gives the colour the richness of older Penguin covers. The book is painted as it looks after years of use rather than as it left the printer, with tea rings, fingerprints, readers' scribbles and missing corners. "I want to create that wear and tear, that authenticity," he has said. The originals are mostly mixed media on canvas, from around 153 by 102 cm up to 244 by 152 cm, and he also works on paper.
Pop borrowings
Halcyon, the London gallery that represents him, has compared the covers to Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup paintings: ordinary printed design turned into the subject of a painting. McQueen makes such debts explicit. A 2025 Happiness Is Expensive painting borrows Warhol's repeated dollar signs, and his 2026 painting Stupid Crazy Love takes the bold, single-word lettering of Robert Indiana and turns it into a confession. Halcyon also points to the difference in surface: thick, worn paint set against Warhol's machine-like flatness.
Paintings and editions
His paintings reach collectors through Halcyon, which has given him London solo exhibitions since 2022. Since February 2022 his compositions have also been issued as limited editions, published by Washington Green Fine Art Publishing in Birmingham and sold through Castle Fine Art. Both businesses, like Halcyon, belong to the Halcyon Fine Art Group. The editions come out as named collections. Non-Fiction came first. Anthology, in 2023, lined up book spines carrying his earlier titles, prompted by the piles of books his wife keeps beside the bed. Double Take, in 2026, used lenticular panels that show one image or another depending on where the viewer stands.

Collector & Guidance
Buying a James McQueen
McQueen's unique paintings are sold through Halcyon. Most of his other work is published by Washington Green, in formats that run from prints on paper to lenticular panels and hand-finished unique pieces.
Paintings
His paintings are signed on the reverse in black ink or oil, and usually dated. Ask for a photograph of the reverse, and for close-ups of the surface: the sanding and worn edges are deliberate, but scuffs to the lacquer are not. Most were first sold by Halcyon, so ask for the gallery's invoice or another record of that first purchase.
Washington Green editions
The prints on paper combine silkscreen and archival pigment on 410gsm Somerset Satin. Each is signed, usually in pencil and sometimes in black ink, numbered and issued with a certificate of authenticity, and most left the publisher already framed. Edition sizes vary by release: 95 for the 2022 Non-Fiction prints, 195 for the 2023 and 2024 prints on paper, and 45 for a 2025 title issued in five colours. Check the number against the right release, because one title can belong to two: It Is What It Is is both a large 2023 print in an edition of 195 and a smaller 2025 print, from Untold Stories, in an edition of 95.
Pieces finished by hand
"Hand-embellished" covers two different things. Some numbered prints have hand finishing worked over the printed image. The publisher also releases unique pieces, a printed image reworked by hand with paint and texture, each identified by its own number (Unique XV, Unique 16) and issued with a hand-signed certificate. Check which of the two the certificate describes, since a unique piece and a numbered print sell at different levels.
Lenticular panels
Volume I and Volume II (2024) and the four Double Take works (2026) are lenticular panels mounted on acrylic, each in an edition of 95 and hand-signed. Ask for photographs from both viewing angles, and check the lens surface for scratches.
Screenprints from before 2022
Screenprints such as the hand-coloured Who The Fuck Is Banksy (2017) were made before his Washington Green editions began. Look for the pencil signature, date and inscription on the sheet, and ask how the seller acquired it.
Selling a James McQueen
Buyers will want to know exactly which release a print comes from, because McQueen reuses titles. Nobody Gets Out Sober, for example, was issued in 2025 as a print on paper and again as Nobody Gets Out Sober (2026), a lenticular panel, each in an edition of 95. Give the collection and year if you know them, the framed size and the edition number, and photograph the signature and number on the sheet.
The publisher's certificate of authenticity is the document buyers look for first, so include it, along with the original invoice if you still have it. Most editions were sold framed by the publisher; say whether yours is still in that frame or has been reframed.
A unique hand-finished piece should be listed with the number written on its certificate and close photographs of the hand-painted areas. A lenticular needs photographs from both viewing angles, so a buyer can see both images and the state of the lens. For a painting, photograph the inscription on the reverse and include the Halcyon invoice or whatever records the first sale.
Some editions were sold as framed sets of two, four or five. Say whether you are offering a set whole or a single print from one.

Market & Collectability
My Castle My Rules (Door), a 2022 work in mixed media on a vintage door, is among McQueen's highest auction results: it made £17,000 hammer at Forum Auctions in London on 13 May 2026, against an estimate of £5,000 to £7,000.
Paintings on canvas have sold for less. Happiness Is Expensive (Blue), an oil on canvas of 2021, made £7,000 hammer at Forum in December 2024, and Nobody Ever Listened to Me (Banksy), acrylic on canvas from 2022, made £4,200 in March 2026. Halcyon priced the originals in his 2023 solo exhibition at £22,500 to £39,500, so recent auction prices for paintings have sat well below the gallery's asking prices.
The editions spread out by format. The large 2023 prints in editions of 195 lead: No Risk, No Story made £2,600 hammer and It Is What It Is £1,800 at Forum in September 2025. A hand-embellished copy of Stupid Crazy Love, a smaller 2023 print in an edition of 195, made £2,400 in February 2024. Standard-size prints without hand finishing sit lower: Me Neither, from an edition of 195, made £900 in September 2025, and Meet Me at the Bottom of the Bottle, from the 2022 edition of 95, made £850 that November.
Sales on FairArt, quoted as prices before fees and shipping, cover the smaller editions, the unique hand-finished pieces and the entry level. From the 2025 boutique editions of 45, If You Ever Leave Me, I'm Coming with You (Red) (Large) sold for £6,500 in January 2026 and the standard-size If You Ever Leave Me, I'm Coming with You (Blue) for £1,950 in October 2025. Hand-embellished unique versions of the same image, such as If You Ever Leave Me... (Pink) Hand Embellished, have sold for £2,950 to £3,750 in 2026. At the entry level, If You Ever Leave Me I'm Coming With You - Exhibition Book, the catalogue of his 2023 Halcyon show, first sold at £75 and changed hands for £250 to £400 in early 2026.
