Double Take

Four lenticular panels from 2026 make up James McQueen's 'Double Take', his second collection in the format. Step to one side and the picture on each panel gives way to a second image. Castle Fine Art released them on 8 May 2026, individually and as a framed set of four.

Significance & Analysis

'Double Take' moved McQueen's lenticulars on from reworking earlier images. His first, the two 'Volume' panels of December 2024, remastered covers from his 2022 debut and sold out quickly. This second collection has twice as many panels, and most of its designs are new.

A title that does what it says

A double take is the second look you give something you think you have misread, and the title can be read as a description of the format: look again from another angle and the picture has changed. McQueen chooses his titles to suggest a story without spelling it out, and 'I Did It For You / The Money' puts both halves of a punchline into its name. Each piece is presented as a contrast held in a single frame: humour giving way to honesty, surface to subtext.

Titles with a history

Two of the lines were already familiar. 'Nobody Gets Out Sober' returns from 2025, when McQueen issued it as a print in his 'Special Edition' pair themed on a night out. 'Too Cool To Give A Fuck' had been a canvas before it became a panel: McQueen painted the line in 2025.

What Are the Double Take Panels Made Of, and How Are They Editioned?

'I Did It For You / The Money', 'Nobody Gets Out Sober (2026)', 'Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want To Come' and 'Too Cool To Give A Fuck' are each a lenticular panel on acrylic, hand-signed by McQueen and issued in an edition of 95. Each is framed at 94 x 66 cm and arrives ready to hang. The framed set of four brings all four panels together; it is a separate edition of 95 and is also hand-signed.

How Can You Tell the 2026 Nobody Gets Out Sober From the 2025 Print?

By the medium and the size, since both were issued in editions of 95. The 2025 'Nobody Gets Out Sober' is a mixed-media print on 410gsm Somerset Satin paper, framed at 104.1 x 78.7 cm, from McQueen's 'Special Edition' series. 'Nobody Gets Out Sober (2026)' is a lenticular panel on acrylic, framed at 94 x 66 cm, and its image changes with the viewing angle.

Why Is Too Cool To Give A Fuck Sometimes Listed With Asterisks?

Because some listings censor the title. McQueen writes the line in full when he captions the work, while the release listings star out the last word. Both names belong to the same 2026 lenticular panel from 'Double Take', so a buyer comparing listings is looking at one edition, not two.
