'12 Days' is Werner Bronkhorst's November 2024 release of 12 framed mini prints, each limited to 100 and offered individually or as a set. Every print crops a small detail from a painting in 'The Strokes', 'The Streets', 'White Lines' or 'Forbidden Grass' and sets it in a small Tasmanian oak frame.

Werner Bronkhorst's '911 WHAT'S YOUR EMERGENCY?' prints reproduce his nine 2024 charcoal car drawings in editions of just 11 each. Every image pairs a luxury car with a slang demand for money painted across it, from 'Need Loot For Lambo' to 'Need Racks For Rari', and the lettering on each print was painted by hand.

### A gap year that lasted

Bronkhorst left Pretoria for Sydney at eighteen, meaning to stay for a gap year. Instead he stayed, working as a builder and making bespoke furniture, and the leftovers of that trade, offcuts and unused plaster, were the first materials he experimented with on a painted surface. He moved to painting full time in 2022, after the birth of his daughter. In December that year a video of one of his paintings being made reached far beyond his usual audience, and filming the studio process has been central to how people find the work ever since.

### Paint first, figures last

He describes the paintings as abstract, both in how they look and in how they are physically made. Most of each canvas is given over to paint laid down in bulk with very little pigment mixed in, swept across with oversized brushes in long curves or packed in short, dense strokes. Only once that has cured does he add the figures, painted in fine detail at a tiny scale, and their size is what turns a white ridge into a ski run or a blue sweep into open water. "We're all just tiny people in a big, abstract world," he wrote when his 2025 Seoul retrospective opened.

Of the painters he cites, Bram Bogart is the one he ties to how he began. The Dutch-born Belgian abstractionist applied paint so heavily that it became an object in its own right, and Bronkhorst has said that Bogart's excess of self-made paint is what started him on this path. In 2026 he made a cloud painting in short, stacked strokes as an open homage.

### Collections built around a setting

He organises his output into named collections, each built around one element or pursuit and usually launched with an exhibition. WET took water as its subject and opened at Bondi Beach in 2025. Big Balls turned to football around the 2026 World Cup. HIGH, his tenth collection, looked up at aircraft, balloons and paragliders over broad fields of sky blue and white, and was shown in Berlin in October 2026.

He has painted Porsches for more than a decade and says every collection includes one somewhere, from a 356 towing a caravan to a grid of nine 911s.

### Sport and partners outside the art world

Sport supplies many of the subjects, and it has brought partners from well beyond the gallery system: Porsche, World Aquatics, the golf brand Malbon and the Formula 1 driver Lando Norris among them. Some releases began as responses to a single event, a Wimbledon fortnight and a Formula 1 race weekend among them, and were made and sold while it was happening.

Werner Bronkhorst(1).jpg

Werner Bronkhorst is a South African-born painter based in Sydney, known for thick, sculpted fields of paint populated by tiny, finely painted figures. Swimmers, skiers, golfers, tennis players and Porsches recur, set against broad strokes that read as water, snow, grass or sky once the figures give them scale. The paint goes on first and cures into ridges; the figures come last. Alongside the textured canvases he has drawn cars in charcoal, each finished with a short phrase in thick paint.

Among the highest recorded auction results for Bronkhorst is Tiebreak! (2025), a 97 x 71 cm painting in acrylic and acrylic gel on canvas from his Wimbledon works, which sold in a FairArt timed online auction on 14 December 2025 for a winning bid of $460,000. Two paintings sold for charity in 2025 came close, and those prices reflect the cause as well as the work: Birdie Chance, offered with Malbon to benefit youth golf programmes, made $385,000 in October, and Fish In Water raised $372,600 for the World Aquatics Foundation in August.

At Phillips in New York on 16 July 2026, From Every Corner (2026), a 200 x 200 cm football painting in acrylic and acrylic gel, sold for $283,800 including premium against an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.

Numbered canvas editions from his fixed-size releases have barely been tested at auction.

With so few results on record, a single sale can reset the reference point for a whole release. Judge an original against other originals, and an edition only against the same title, size and paper.

## Iconic Series and Artworks

Bronkhorst's work is organised through different series, where he creatively investigates specific visual and thematic territories. _The White Lines_ series has a nod to a modernist aesthetic with empty and stark surfaces, adorned with performative miniature figures making gestures against a multitude of geometrically carved forms that are abstract. The _White Lines_ series invites contemplation of loneliness, motion and minimalist composition.

The _Forbidden Grass_ series shifts focus to textures that mirror nature, combining turf, pigment, interruption of the sculptural, and suggesting suppressed behaviours. Human forms within Forbidden Grass are either diminished or absorbed by nature, drawing humour from forms of existential absurdity around the environment and control.

The _Wet_ series is perhaps one of Bronkhorst's most visually immediate, consisting of high-contrast automotive drawings, typically of vintage cars, overlaid with large, hand-written text. _Monaco_ and _Sail Away_ represent some of Bronkhorst's best work in this series and are funny, whilst invoking speed, nostalgia, lust, and longing.

Bronkhorst's wit, restraint, and technical ability render the creation of works that are immediately available in form but rich in meaning.

## Artistic Techniques and Themes

Bronkhorst is recognised as an artist who is intentional with his material choices, and works in layers. His sculptural works effectively provide a highly textured often architectural backdrop with material like wood, foam, paint and artificial grass. He then assembles miniature human figurines to create stark oppositions in scale, texture and gesture.

Bronkhorst has also created motor vehicle pieces (in charcoal and graphite) that are technically precise and tonally rich. He often uses overlaid text, which is typically handwritten in bold strokes, as an additional layer of conceptual thought, including emotive/reflective content.

Thematically, Bronkhorst often explores notions of the human condition through the themes of sport, leisure, nature and intimacy. The miniature figures he creates, running on synthetic grass, encapsulated in a white void, climbing concrete surfaces play out a tension of agency in a specific environment.

## Art Market and Investment

Werner Bronkhorst's market momentum has developed rapidly (in the last few years or so). He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, in Australia and international spaces, has sold out multiple exhibitions and has an increasing presence on the secondary market. He has had some recent auction sales, and his gallery sales data indicate a strong and steady increase in value, especially for his works from the _White Lines_ and _Wet_ series.

Based on its strong visual appeal and conceptual engagement, risk-tolerant collectors are drawn to Bronkhorst's work because of the multiple ways in which the work speaks to other practices at the intersection of minimalist sculpture, text works inspired by popular culture, and hyper-realistic drawing. The overlap of these practices gives Bronkhorst a chance of collecting interest from the gallerist in both contemporary and design markets.

The artist's profile is accelerating. His artworks offer a perspective into new media and conceptual art appreciated by collectors with interest in technically masterful, narrative-based storytelling.

## Authenticity and Provenance

When purchasing any of Werner Bronkhorst's works, the authentication is very important. You should receive a certificate of authenticity with every work created by the artist or authorised galleries or dealers. The certificate of authenticity will guarantee that your work is a genuine piece produced by the artist or their estate.

The proper authentication can come from provenance and the history of the artwork, knowing that it came from the correct galleries and publishers. We are always happy to provide that information as we will check the authenticity and provenance of an artwork as part of the [FairArt guarantee](https://fairart.com/how-it-works/guarantee).
