The Beaten Path 2023

'The Beaten Path 2024' brought five hand-signed Bob Dylan giclées to Castle Fine Art on 4 October 2024, each in an edition of 295. Four standard-size prints are joined by a larger 'Brooklyn Heights', in a release built around tree-lined streets, drive-ins, roadside stores and musicians playing outside a home.

Significance & Analysis

This chapter turns 'The Beaten Path' towards the people in its streets. The 2024 prints were presented as a view of residential America, bringing figures more into focus: people walking under the trees, and music being played outside a house.

Two of the titles, 'Sound of Music' and 'Musical Notes, San Francisco', name that music. 'Green Truck' and 'Hamburger Kuku' keep to more familiar ground, the vehicles and roadside food of earlier prints such as 'Truck and Bull' and 'Hamburger Stand, Long Beach'. The release has been likened to the work of the 1950s photographer Robert Frank, as a record of everyday Americans who never make the news. Dylan put his attachment to the subject plainly in 1978: "Creatively, I couldn't live anywhere but America, because I understand the tone behind the language."

Before and after

The release followed two others in 2024. 'The Beaten Path: The Silkscreen Collection' had grown in January with two new silkscreens, and 'The Beaten Path, Route 66' followed in June with four prints given over to the highway. Where the Route 66 prints stayed on the road, the October chapter moved into town. The series' next release was a landscape, the silkscreen triptych 'Mountain Road', in January 2025. The musicians resurfaced elsewhere: 'Point Blank', released in May 2025, is a set of studies of subjects Dylan encountered or imagined, with titles such as 'Concert Pianist', 'Jazz Guitar Player' and 'Young Man With A Horn'.

What Size Are The Beaten Path 2024 Prints?

'Green Truck', 'Hamburger Kuku' and 'Sound of Music' each measure 88.9 x 73.7 cm framed, and 'Musical Notes, San Francisco' 71.1 x 91.4 cm framed. 'Brooklyn Heights' is much larger, at 142.2 x 111.8 cm framed. Unframed sizes have not been published. Each print is a giclée on paper and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

What Is the Difference Between the Set of Four and the Set of Five?

The set of four holds the four standard-size prints: 'Green Truck', 'Hamburger Kuku', 'Musical Notes, San Francisco' and 'Sound of Music'. The set of five adds the large 'Brooklyn Heights', so it is the complete release. Both were offered as an unframed portfolio or framed, and each set is an edition of 295.

How Is the 2024 Brooklyn Heights Different From Earlier Versions?

Dylan's 'Brooklyn Heights' has been editioned at least four times. The 2016 print is a standard-format giclée in an edition of 295, and the 2017 version a silkscreen in an edition of 195. The 2019 print is a medium-format edition of 295, 85.7 x 59.7 cm unframed. The 2024 print is the large print of this release, sold individually or within the set of five, so match the year on the listing and certificate as well as the title.
