Bob Dylan|The Drawn Blank Series 2018 (10th Anniversary)
All The Drawn Blank Series 2018 (10th Anniversary) Works By Bob Dylan (23)
Significance & Analysis
This release is a look back at Dylan's first decade as a visual artist. Ten years after 'The Drawn Blank Series' launched his work in print in 2008, the anniversary revisited images that had already been editioned rather than adding new ones, so the selection reads as a short anthology of the series.
Every image in it had appeared in an earlier instalment. 'Dad's Restaurant' and 'Sunday Afternoon' go back to the first release in 2008, 'Rose On A Hillside' and 'Motel Pool' to 2009, and 'Bell Tower In Stockholm' to 2013. Each is a separate edition from those earlier prints, so a 2018 'Sunflowers' and a 2010 'Sunflowers' are different works with their own numbering. The release was presented as a reworking of familiar scenes in a bolder style.
The scenes go back to drawings Dylan made on tour between 1989 and 1992, published in his 1994 book 'Drawn Blank' and reworked in watercolour and gouache for the series. The ten chosen for 2018 are everyday subjects from that material: a pub interior, a restaurant, a motel pool, a café terrace, a bicycle and a vase of sunflowers.
The anniversary was the series' last large release. After it, the 'Drawn Blank' name returned only for a set of two prints in 2021, while his later prints concentrated on the American roadside views of 'The Beaten Path', begun in 2016, and his long-running 'Train Tracks' image.
