Jealous x David Shrigley

David Shrigley's 'Jealous x David Shrigley' series is made up of 28 screenprints released with the publisher Jealous from 2017 to May 2026, most in editions of 125. Each print sets a single hand-lettered line, often beside an animal, in layers of flat colour printed at the Jealous Print Studio in East London.

Significance & Analysis

From 2017 to 2026 Jealous printed and published at least one new Shrigley screenprint every year, and across the series its studio pushed his flat, graphic drawings further and further into colour.

From a poem to the print fairs

The series opens with 'Another Task For You' (2017), a commission for 'The Print and the Poem', a series Jealous co-published with Enitharmon Editions. Shrigley's contribution was a short text poem, launched at the London Original Print Fair. 'I Am Currently On Fire' followed in January 2018, sold by telephone only, and 'Fucking Ace' was released that September at the party for Jealous' tenth birthday.

From then on most editions were launched in person: at the London Art Fair in Islington, at the London Original Print Fair at Somerset House and at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, with any prints left over going online afterwards. When the London Original Print Fair moved online during the 2020 lockdown, 'Make Your Mark' appeared as a surprise web release.

Layers of colour

Each colour in a screenprint is printed separately, through its own stencilled screen, so every added colour means another run through the studio. 'Another Task For You' used six colours. By 2023 'The Plant Loves Me' used 26, and 'I Think About Football' 34. Most of the later prints also carry a varnish layer on top. The images stay flat and graphic, like his drawings, but the colour is built up far beyond a line drawing.

The subjects are Shrigley's familiar mix of deadpan commands and animals with something to say: a cat in 'Old Cat', a dog in 'No One is Happier Than Me', a frog in 'I Am Very Beautiful', a bear in 'Everything Must Be Made Sweeter'. 'Live Each Day As If It Were Your First' turns the usual advice about living each day as your last on its head, while 'Stop Panicking' and 'Ignore The Ghosts' are delivered as flat instructions.

At auction

The highest result for an edition in the five years to October 2026 came in June 2023, when an artist's proof of 'My Rampage Is Over' sold for £22,860 with buyer's premium in Phillips' online sale devoted to Shrigley. In the same sale 'Live Each Day As If It Were Your First' reached £19,050 for edition number 2. Both titles did well before and after: 'My Rampage Is Over' had already made £15,120 at Phillips London in June 2021, and 'Live Each Day As If It Were Your First' sold at Phillips for £4,445 to £8,890 between January 2024 and June 2025. Results for other titles at Phillips and Bonhams from 2023 to 2025 mostly fell between about £1,500 and £4,800.

What Are the Edition Sizes of the Jealous x David Shrigley Prints?

'Another Task For You' (2017) and 'I Am Currently On Fire' (2018) were each published in an edition of 100, and 'Another Task For You' also has ten artist's proofs. Every other released edition, from 'Don't' and 'Fucking Ace' (2018) to 'Everything Must Be Made Sweeter' (2026), was published in an edition of 125, and many of these also have 12 artist's proofs.

What Size Are the Prints?

Most are upright sheets of about 76 x 56 cm on 410gsm Somerset paper, and several, including 'Don't' and 'Black Cats Everywhere', have cut edges. A number of the earlier prints, from 2017 to 2020, are slightly smaller, at 75 to 75.5 x 55 to 56 cm. Two are square: 'Extract the Juice from Everything' and 'Leap Into the Void', both from 2023, measure 55 x 55 cm.

Does the Edition Number Say Anything About How a Print Was Sold?

Yes. Jealous released most of these editions in price tiers, usually blocks of 25 prints, with the price rising as each block sold. The lowest numbers sold first at the opening price and the highest numbers last at the top tier, and at launch buyers were generally limited to one print each. The number on a print therefore shows roughly when in the release it was bought, though it makes no difference to the print itself.

Why Do Some Titles Appear in Different Forms?

Most of these titles are the words written in the image, so short and long forms circulate. 'Black Cats Everywhere' was launched as 'Black Cats', while the full text reads 'Black Cats Everywhere Everywhere You Look Black Cats'. 'I Think About Football' is published as 'I Think About Football All Of The Time'; it is dated 2023 but was released at the London Art Fair in January 2024. 'Fucking Ace (2018)' is the eight-colour Jealous screenprint, distinct from the woodcut and linocut Shrigley has made with the same words.
