All Stephen Friedman Gallery Editions Works By David Shrigley (10)
Significance & Analysis
These editions show Shrigley turning his acrylic paintings on paper into screenprints and then, with 'Time', reversing the process.
From painting to screenprint
The screenprints grew out of his acrylic works on paper. Shrigley has said that works on paper "disappear quite quickly", and that "making screenprints was a way of kind of keeping hold of the work". Every colour needs its own screen, so the more screens a print uses, the more closely it can follow the painting. Shrigley sometimes uses more than 30, and says this makes it "very difficult to tell the difference between the screenprint and the original painting". 'Kindness' and 'Fast Train To Shitsville' add a varnish layer over the colours.
The gallery released 'I Would Like to Write on Your Wall With my Crayons' in July 2020, alongside an online catalogue of his screenprints from 2012 to 2020. The print shows a rainbow assortment of crayons with his request to use them to "write all over your walls". Like much of his work, it makes a joke of an everyday situation.
'Time': back to painting
'Time' (2020) turns the process round. Instead of printing a painting 125 times, Shrigley painted each of the 125 copies by hand in acrylic, and announced the release as a "multiple painting". It followed 'Shits', the hand-painted edition of 125 he made for Counter Editions in 2019.
